LEGO confirms qualifying themes for 40581 BIONICLE Tahu & Takua GWP
The LEGO Group has confirmed exactly which themes will qualify for this week’s new retro gift-with-purchase, 40581 BIONICLE Tahu & Takua.
Initial communication from the LEGO Group suggested orders across all themes would count towards the spend thresholds for the BIONICLE freebie, but subsequent reports indicated it would only be available when buying sets from particular themes. The LEGO Group has now confirmed to Brick Fanatics that you’ll need to shop across seven specific themes to get your hands on the 219-piece build.
The themes included in the offer are LEGO City, Monkie Kid, Friends, Classic, NINJAGO, DOTS and Creator 3-in-1. You’ll need to spend at least £90 in the UK, $100 in the US and €100 in Europe across those themes to qualify for 40581 BIONICLE Tahu & Takua, a gift-with-purchase that – like 40567 Forest Hideout and 40580 Blacktron Cruiser before it – revisits a dormant (but fan-favourite) theme.
Also like those other nostalgia-fuelled gifts-with-purchase, however, 40581 BIONICLE Tahu & Takua carries an 18+ label on its box. That speaks to the target audience for the set, which is adults who grew up with BIONICLE 20 years ago – and which is not really served at all by the themes included in this deal. All seven of those themes are geared primarily towards younger fans, while the LEGO Group’s original 18+ themes are left out.
That’s not to say that there aren’t sets to interest adult fans in those themes, of course – from 71741 NINJAGO City Gardens to 31129 Majestic Tiger, most of them have plenty to offer older builders – but leaving off LEGO Icons, Architecture and (to an extent) Speed Champions feels like a puzzling decision. You can see the logic in limiting the qualifying themes to in-house product lines (because that’s what BIONICLE was), but not really to this degree.
40581 BIONICLE Tahu & Takua will be available from January 27 with all orders above £90 / $100 / €100 on City, Friends, NINJAGO, Classic, Creator 3-in-1, DOTS and Monkie Kid sets. Time to start planning your shopping list…

- I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
