LEGO VIDIYO 43101 Bandmates officially revealed

The LEGO Group has finally unveiled the full range of LEGO VIDIYO sets arriving next month, including a brand new minifigure series.

LEGO VIDIYO is the company’s new augmented-reality theme, developed in conjunction with Universal Music Group, which allows kids to scan colourful characters into an app to create music videos. We’ve already seen all six of the theme’s BeatBoxes courtesy of Smyths Toys, which jumped the gun on the LEGO Group’s own reveal by a matter of hours.

This is the first time we’ve seen official images of 43101 Bandmates, however, which takes its cues from the Collectible Minifigures series with blind-boxed cardboard packaging. There are 12 colourful characters to collect in total, including a Bunny Dancer, Ice Cream Saxophonist and Alien Keytarist.

That shift away from plastic packaging means you won’t be able to feel out specific minifigures, so you’ll truly be buying these zany characters at random. Each one is packaged with its own unique BeatBit (a 2×2 printed tile) and two random BeatBits, all of which can be scanned into the corresponding LEGO VIDIYO app to generate digital effects, animations and props for your music videos.

There are a total of 130 different BeatBits launching in the first year of LEGO VIDIYO, while the in-app music library contains around 30 songs from Universal Music Group artists (including Mabel and Marshmello), with the promise of frequent updates in the months to come.

The LEGO VIDIYO BeatBoxes will retail for £17.99 in the UK, while 43101 Bandmates will be priced at £3.99 each. That means the full collection of all six BeatBoxes and all 12 bandmates will set you back a combined total of £155.82.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
