LEGO VIDIYO sets no longer due to retire in 2021

The first wave of LEGO VIDIYO BeatBoxes will now hang around on shelves until at least the end of 2022 – a year beyond their original retirement date.

That’s according to Brick Fanatics’ sources, which now list 43102 Candy Mermaid BeatBox, 43103 Punk Pirate BeatBox and so on as retiring by December 31, 2022. By comparison, their scheduled exit date as of last month was December 31, 2021.

While we don’t know exactly why these six sets have been given an extra year on shelves, there are a couple of possibilities. The first is that they’ve proved more popular than originally anticipated, although given the LEGO Group has made an official statement effectively ruling out future additions to the augmented-reality theme, that doesn’t feel quite on the money.

More likely – especially factoring in that the majority of VIDIYO’s BeatBoxes have been available for roughly half off at Amazon for the past few months – is that the LEGO Group just hasn’t managed to shift its available stock, and so will continue trying to do so next year. Just how low prices will need to go for that to happen remains to be seen.

These retirement dates aren’t set in stone, so the BeatBoxes could theoretically be pulled up from December to July 2022, for instance. Either way, this probably isn’t any indication that VIDIYO has more life in it than expected.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
