First look at Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi drops on Disney+

A first look at next year’s Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi series has debuted on Disney+ as part of Disney+ Day’s exclusive reveals.

The series is set to feature Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen resuming their respective Star Wars prequel trilogy roles as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. The six-part series, which will arrive at some point in 2022, has been written by Joby Harold – whose previous credits include Army of the Dead and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – and directed by Mandalorian alum Deborah Chow.

The first look is only a minute in length and doesn’t give us much to go on, but does reveal that at least some of the action will take place on Tatooine and other planets. The series is set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, during the rise of the Galactic Empire, when Obi-Wan was holed up in the Jundland Wastes.

Only a few concept art images are glimpsed during the reveal, but they do show an older Obi-Wan riding an Eopie from Episode I, a multitude of Imperial Stormtroopers, a Jedi Hunter disembarking a new ship on Tatooine, alien marketplaces and a Hoth-like hangar with snowspeeders, similar to those seen in The Empire Strikes Back.

Most exciting is a glimpse at concept art of Darth Vader and Obi-Wan duelling with lightsabers among flaming wreckage, and the Dark Lord of the Sith sitting on a large throne, looking at what appears to some sort of hologram.

“This is quite a dark time that we’re coming into with (Obi-Wan),” says Deborah Chow. “Just being a Jedi—it’s not safe. There are Jedi Hunters out there. We (also) couldn’t tell the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi without addressing Anakin or Vader.”

We’ve already had plenty of LEGO sets based on The Mandalorian, as well as one for The Bad Batch, while rumours suggest at least two sets are coming in 2022 for The Book of Boba Fett. That all points to the LEGO Group leaning heavily into the Disney+ slate for inspiration – particularly in lieu of any new movies – so we could well see content based on Obi-Wan Kenobi next year.

And if we do, we could end up getting our first Beru Lars minifigure, as Bonnie Piesse is also confirmed to return for the series (alongside Owen Lars actor Joel Edgerton). The full cast revealed so far includes Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
