The new Avatar movie is over three hours long

Avatar: The Way of Water has a reported runtime of approximately 190 minutes, suggesting there’s plenty of inspiration for LEGO Avatar sets going forwards.

Avatar: The Way of Water is the sequel to James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar – released in 2009, and (when adjusted for inflation) the second-highest-grossing movie ever released. After over a decade of anticipation, the first sequel to the movie is appearing this year. Avatar: The Way of Water is set a decade after the first movie, focusing on original heroes Jake Sully and Neytiri and the new challenges they have to face.

In anticipation of the film’s release, the LEGO Group has introduced a brand new LEGO Avatar theme that draws inspiration from the Avatar universe. So far five LEGO sets have appeared, all inspired by the original movie. However, a recent teaser by the LEGO Group suggests that additional set reveals aren’t far off.

The runtime for the movie comes to us via The Hollywood Reporter, although an official runtime for the movie hasn’t yet been announced by Disney. It’s also worth pointing out that a film’s stated running time includes its credits, which – given this film’s technical sophistication – seem likely to take a while.

In any case, it seems possible that there’s plenty of different Avatar scenes to inspire LEGO sets in the foreseeable future. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is just over two hours in length, with more than fifty LEGO sets drawing inspiration from that movie’s events. There’s a chance LEGO Avatar could follow a similar path – particularly with several more Avatar movies in the years ahead.

That idea is reinforced by the fact there are many different directions for Avatar tie-in sets to go in. As such, if you’re an Avatar fan, the LEGO Group might present you with plenty to sink your teeth into. Previous rumours suggests a handful of LEGO sets may accompany Avatar: The Way of Water in January 2023, but these have yet to be confirmed.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in cinemas worldwide on December 16. All five of the initial LEGO Avatar sets – including BrickHeadz set 40554 Jake Sully & his Avatar – are now available on LEGO.com
