A late 2022 contender joins Brick Fanatics’ Top 20 LEGO Sets List

LEGO Super Mario 71411 The Mighty Bowser is the latest addition to Brick Fanatics’ Top 20 LEGO Sets List, which tracks the very best products currently available in the UK and Europe.

A late contender from 2022, the 2,807-piece build joins 19 other sets as a clear representation of the best the LEGO Group has to offer right now. In the case of 71411 The Mighty Bowser, that’s through not only its challenging, complex and surprising build, but also its puppet-like articulation and unrivalled display appeal. The LEGO Super Mario set is easily the theme’s best character build to date, and perhaps even the best of all time.

That’s a strong claim, but it’s difficult to think of many others – across any and all themes – that can match Bowser’s size, detail and authenticity, while still packing in all the personality of its subject matter. And whether it’s in his movement or simply stationary on display, 71411 The Mighty Bowser brilliantly communicates the King of the Koopas’ character.

It’s for all those reasons and more (check out our full review for those) that Mario’s nemesis slots straight into sixth place in Brick Fanatics’ Top 20 LEGO Sets List, between 10497 Galaxy Explorer and 75978 Diagon Alley. That’s heady company to be in, no doubt, but it’s going to take a lot to push Bowser down the list. Let’s see what 2023 has to offer…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

I’m stunned to see Monkey King Warrior Mech and The City of Lanterns missing from your top 20 list. I know both of those sets come from a niche theme but the Mech in particular is in the all time greats sets discussion and Lanterns was the best set of 2022.
