Playing LEGO Super Mario without any bricks

Is there a way to take away the bricks and arguably make LEGO Super Mario even more creative?

LEGO Super Mario is the new theme that takes the essence of a platform video game and reimagines it in the physical world. Super Mario 71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course (review) is the essential set that opens up the entire theme, containing the interactive Mario figure.

In order to play through a LEGO level, Mario must jump on the start space and then jump from one thing to another, defeating enemies and gaining power ups. The electronic figure recognises different items through their barcodes.

In this video, Dan acknowledges that “the overall experience wore thin quick”, and declares: “we want to push the possibilities of LEGO Mario a bit further”.

To do so, he screenshots the barcodes in the companion app and prints them out at various sizes, building a variety of DIY elements to give LEGO Mario a home-made level to travel through. It doesn’t really make the game any more engaging, as it’s still just placing Mario on different tiles, but it’s fun to see his creative take on the product.
