Scalpers are cashing in on LEGO Ideas 21339 BTS Dynamite already

LEGO Ideas 21339 BTS Dynamite is temporarily out of stock in the US, and scalpers are already cashing in on demand via secondary marketplaces.

The first LEGO K-pop set (and the first based on a specific music video) launched on March 1, and quickly sold out at LEGO.com in the US. Given that’s the only place it’s available to buy at the moment (Ideas sets typically pop up through third-party retailers a few months after release), anyone hoping to get their hands on the set sharpish has had to resort to the aftermarket.

Cue a flood of sales way above RRP for those who just can’t wait to pick up Jin, Suga, j-hope and the gang. It’s a tale as old as time in the LEGO community, and given the size of the BTS ARMY (Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth) – which counts as many as 40 million members worldwide – it’s perhaps no surprise to see it happening for 21339 BTS Dynamite, which recreates the Bangtan Boys’ music video for their smash hit Dynamite.

The set retails for $99.99 in the US (before tax and shipping), but budding entrepreneurs – or scalpers, if you prefer – are capitalising on its ‘temporarily out of stock’ status by raising prices of the set on eBay. A quick look at sold listings shows buyers are seemingly happy to snap up the 749-piece set for as much as $199.98, although most copies have sold for between $150 and $170.

That’s still a hefty markup on the original price, and one that could probably be avoided by just… waiting for a bit. 21339 BTS Dynamite is only temporarily out of stock at LEGO.com, and will undoubtedly be back before long. It’s still available to order in the UK and Europe, and also at LEGO.com in Korea.

According to a survey published in 2021, the US is home to just 8.4% of the total BTS ARMY, so it’s slightly surprising to see 21339 BTS Dynamite sell out there before anywhere else. As much as there’s high demand for the set, though – and the eBay sales are proof alone of that – it’s only one half of the equation. It may be that the LEGO Group simply underestimated that demand, and subsequently produced fewer copies for the North American market.

We can only speculate, but the balance of supply and demand is clearly tilted squarely in one direction for the moment. Keep an eye on Brick Fanatics for updates on when 21339 BTS Dynamite is back in stock in the US, and click here to check out our review in the meantime.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
