Six LEGO sets to celebrate 90 years of the LEGO Group

In a few days on August 10, 2022, the LEGO Group officially celebrates 90 years of play and there’s still time to order a set ready for the anniversary.

From wooden toys to Town, Castle, and Space in 1978 to 42 themes currently in production, the LEGO Group have changed a lot over the past 90 years. On August 10, the company celebrates its anniversary and all of the specialised sets are now available to help celebrate the big day.

However, they’re not the only LEGO models that you should consider for the 90th anniversary. Remembering the legacy of the LEGO Group, here are our recommendations for a 90th-anniversary order.

6 – 60292 Town Center

One of the first LEGO themes was Town, which eventually became the CITY that we know today. While LEGO CITY has changed a lot, it still keeps the core concept of a slice-of-life theme and that’s evident in 60292 Town Center, which even uses the original name of the theme, though that might just be a coincidence.

5 – 11021 90 Years of Play

It almost goes without saying that 11021 90 Years of Play is a perfect model for the 90th anniversary of the LEGO Group. As mentioned in the name, this model celebrates the history of the company’s many products from the wooden duck to the brick-built sets they have become known for, referencing themes old and new.

4 – 40382 Birthday Set

While not as expansive as other sets on this list, 40382 Birthday Set makes a good budget option for the big day. You could consider the 90th anniversary of the LEGO Group to be a birthday, dressing the included elements in this model up appropriately and adding 40382 Birthday Set to a larger 90th-anniversary display.

3 – 10497 Galaxy Explorer

Another LEGO set that is more obviously intended for the 90th anniversary is 10497 Galaxy Explorer, recreating 497 Galaxy Explorer with updated bricks and building techniques. This model showcases how far the LEGO Group has come throughout their history but remembers the stories that got them to the modern day.

2 – 75192 Millennium Falcon

Though it wasn’t one of the first themes, LEGO Star Wars has undeniably become an important part of the LEGO portfolio for over 20 years, and it has a place in the 90th-anniversary celebrations. While there are many LEGO Star Wars sets currently available, 75192 Millennium Falcon is the ultimate tribute to this theme thanks to its size and grandeur.

1 – 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle

The largest of the LEGO Group’s specialised 90th-anniversary models by far is 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle. After demand online and through LEGO Ideas, one of the biggest LEGO castles is finally here, featuring plenty of hidden details to find, packed within a model that’s ideal for display and play thanks to its unfolding design.
