Solo: A LEGO Star Wars Build – Han Solo (A New Hope)

Brick Fanatics has searched from one corner of the Internet to the other to find the finest LEGO recreations of Han Solo, in celebration of the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story

Star Wars triumphantly returns to the month of May, with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story in cinemas this week. Few characters in movie history are as beloved as the smuggler who becomes a hero, demonstrated by just how many LEGO builds are inspired by the character. To celebrate the latest movie in the growing saga, Brick Fanatics has invited talented builders to share their Han Solo models and explain what it is about this iconic character that connects with them.

Han Solo – A New Hope

What do you like about Han Solo?
Han Solo is my favourite character of all time (sharing the ranking of course with Roland Deschain and Sir Samuel Vimes). He is edgy, has a crooked moral code and is hilariously funny. When we first meet him in A New Hope, he is kind of the counterpoint to Obi-Wan Kenobi as a mentor for Luke. I really like the stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy looking nerf herder – and I love his ship, the Millennium Falcon. I have built it several times over the years.

What do you think is the key aspect of Han Solo’s character?
The thing that intrigues me most about Han Solo is his unpredictability, he serves as a kind of wild card in the movies and wherever else we meet him. He represents the little bit of chaos that makes the Rebel Alliance superior in the end. The character is a witty, cocky and sometimes most unlikeable son of a gun who you wouldn’t want to be your kids’ kindergarten teacher, but you realise that without him everything would have ended very differently. There is a core of light in everyone’s darkness and Han Solo is the kind of character who shows this perfectly.

How did you decide to build Han Solo in this way?
Since I build big MOCs to feature at exhibitions in Germany, most of my brick stash has already been used and I have to work with the rest. So I definitely did not have enough material to do a whole scene in minfigure scale, which would have been my usual approach, and therefore had to come up with something else – a Han Solo figure.

What do you like about the finished build?
I really like the finished build because I frequently try to do figures in this scale but this time it worked out fast and really well. With the contests’ dead line at Rogue Bricks in mind, I was very happy with the result. It stands well on its own, has movable joints and features some interesting part usage. The head, for example, is a tan car cockpit from the LEGO Adventurers line, the hair is very delicately made and most of all I like the Correllian Blood Stripes on his pants that are the katana used by the red NINJAGO villains.

What is your favourite Han Solo moment?
There are so many great moments, like when in Return of the Jedi, he intends to sneak up on the Scout Trooper on Endor and then steps on a twig… perfect Solo chaos and slap-stick at the same time! But without wanting to be cheesy, I guess my most favourite moment is when he’s about to become a carbonite sculpture and answers Leia’s “I love you,” simply with, “I know.”
