The LEGO Movie 2 predicted to have biggest opening weekend of the year so far

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is expected to have the biggest US opening weekend so far this year.

With takings for cinemas in 2019 down on last year, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is expected to give the box office a boost. Variety projects that the film will take $50 million in the USA during its opening weekend in 4,000 cinemas, which will be the biggest opening for a film so far this year. Some projections even suggest that positive word of mouth might push it above $60 million.

Back in 2014, The LEGO Movie took $69 million during its opening weekend, which was better than analysts had expected. It went on to take $469 million worldwide over its run, with The LEGO Batman movie taking $312 million and The LEGO NINJAGO Movie taking $123 million.

Competition for family audiences will arrive when How to Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World and Captain Marvel arrive in cinemas over the next few weeks. This weekend, the only other big release is What Men Want, which is not geared towards children.
