The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part 70821 Emmet and Benny’s ‘Build and Fix’ Workshop! review

In an off-screen moment from The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, two of the characters are tuning up their rides. Does 70821 Emmet and Benny’s ‘Build and Fix’ Workshop! offer anything to fans older than the target age?

With the 4+ sets finding their way into regular LEGO themes, here comes another one for the unjustly critical eye of the seasoned LEGO fan. Taking inspiration from The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, 70821 Emmet and Benny’s ‘Build and Fix Workshop’! has a title that hints at it skewing younger. It builds a hint of a workshop with some tools, plus a vehicle for each character.

It is Benny who seems to be the Apocalypseburg mechanic in The LEGO Movie 2, yet this set bases the workshop around both him and Emmet. Starting with the spaceship, it captures the shape of a classic LEGO Space spaceship thanks to one huge moulded piece. It is almost offensively simple to build – while yes, younger children cannot build at the same level as older children, they should still get to do some building with their LEGO set.

As a model, it looks like a fun homage to Classic Space, but nothing really worthy of display. Its best touches are the small vehicle that rolls out of the back, which really is reminiscent of the tiny explorer vehicles that were included in the early Space sets. The slope with printed Space logo will also appeal to fans of the beloved theme – but it can also be found in 70841 Benny’s Space Squad (review), a much more appealing set.

Emmet’s Escape Buggy is a miniature version of 70829 Emmet and Lucy’s Escape Buggy (review), and to that extent is a curiosity – what would it look like if a big, movie accurate set was distilled down to a tiny miniature version? Well, like this. That does not make it worth owning though, with an even more basic construction and bland result than the spaceship. In this set, the bonnet is printed, while in 70829 is a sticker, with the detailing on the front of the car printed too.

The tool trolley is fun and the colours on the gas tank match the Octan branding. The printed wall piece could be handy for those building Apocalypseburg models, but probably not far beyond that as the colour palette it uses is very specific. Red and blue spray cans match the two vehicles, adding to the idea that Emmet and Benny have built these vehicles at their workshop.

Two minifigures are included – the titular characters. Benny is his traditional, two-armed version, and Emmet is the variant with a closed mouth smile and alternate focused expression.

Printed part fiends may want this set, but with so very many decent The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part sets to choose from, no-one else has any reason to pick up this one.
