The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – Five of the most desirable sets

Brick Fanatics picks out the five most desirable sets from the recently revealed The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part sets

A second trailer for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part has landed, and brought with it a very cool theatrical poster, new character reveals and most importantly – more new LEGO sets. If you thought the models from the original film were crazy, then these are even crazier. Mashing together minifigures, mini-dolls and multiple aesthetics from various “in-house” LEGO ranges such as Friends and Creator, they are some of the most zany LEGO models ever produced.

Out of such a strong initial wave, Brick Fanatics has to be tough and battle-ready to pick the best five.

70826 Rex’s Rex-treme Offroader

Rex Dangervest is going to be a hilarious amalgamation of some of actor Chris Pratt’s varied roles, and the offroader is clearly a love-letter to Jurassic World. The dark-blue colour scheme of the offroader, accented with lime-green, is quite similar to the vehicle colours seen in both Jurassic World films, and the ubiquitous stud-shooters add some extra playability. Owen Grady’s trained velociraptor Blue is even referenced by including an all-blue version of the dinosaur. However the 3-in-1 aspect is questionable – does a velociraptor with mech-claws and a saddle really count?

70827 Ultrakatty & Warrior Lucy

If Unikitty’s usual enraged form wasn’t enough, then Ultrakatty is queen of the LEGO beasts. It’s impressive how organic looking the LEGO designers have managed to make Ultrakatty look, with the grey ball-joints not distracting as they appear part of her armour. The huge brown spines covering most of her body seem more puffer-fish than actual cat, but creative license is the key to these sets. The new Warrior-Lucy is a great minifigure armed with equipment like her stop sign, although it’s surprising that Emmet hasn’t seen any kind of update (perhaps that reflects his lack of internal change…..

70830 Sweet Mayhem’s Systar Starship

Just like most villains, Sweet Mayhem has her own sweet personal ride, and her ship is one of the most unusual sets from this first wave. A multitude of differently sized curved pieces work successfully to make the ship quite spherical, whilst the azure and white colour-scheme is extremely eye-catching. Sweet Mayhem’s mini-doll is a stand out with sparkly azure wings and a unique helmet mould that actually looks like her ship but just in miniature. The cute star seen from the trailer makes a rather adorable appearance – although it is strange to think such cute things could pose any threat to our heroes.

70831 Emmet’s Dream House/Rescue Rocket

Emmet’s house, with its primary colour,s is a nod to some of the earliest LEGO System sets from the 1970s, although hugely updated to match the modern Creator aesthetic. Thankfully 70831 doesn’t fall into the trap of most LEGO houses by simply being a façade, and actually has a fully furnished interior. Like several of the sets within this range, Emmet’s house can be re-built into different configurations, which will likely result in many happy hours spent destroying and then re-building the model into a house or spaceship (space-house?). Getting four of the main characters in one set seems decent value too.

70834 MetalBeard’s Heavy Metal Motor Trike

What happens when you combine a pirate with a post-apocalyptic Harley Davidson? 70834 appears to answer that strange question. With cannons, tyre-slashers and an eye-patch wearing shark, MetalBeard’s trike has more extras and modifications than a top-of-the-range sports car. There’s some great parts usage on display from the official photos, like anchors on the front axle, a helm on the nose, and a treasure chest within the framework – just in case you missed the pirate vibe at all. The only slight disappointment is that Apocalypse-borg Benny is the only unique minifigure.

LEGO fans can look forward to the new year knowing that their January blues will be banished (along with any Christmas savings) by this upcoming release and by February everything will be awesome once again…

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part will be released on February 8, 2019.
