The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part sets – the Brick Fanatics picks

After taking a look at the sets that are coming for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, the Brick Fanatics team has assembled to pick out their favourites

A whopping 19 LEGO sets for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part were revealed yesterday, although admittedly that includes a DUPLO product. While the trailer is entertaining and the poster is nicely designed, it is these upcoming sets that has got the Brick Fanatics team talking.

After staring lovingly at the images, zooming in on them, sharing them and discussing them, Chris, Daniel, Jme and Dimitri have picked out their absolute must-haves…

70829 Emmet and Lucy’s Escape Buggy – Jme’s pick

The original LEGO Movie had some standout sets to be sure, and the sequel is looking to be no slouch either. Sadly, the “repurposed” look of many of the original sets seems to be absent, though several of the designs on display look fantastic.

I’m a big fan of monster trucks, post-apocalyptic settings, and muscle cars, so Emmet and Wildstyle’s Escape Buggy ticks all the boxes. It’s both slick and aggressive, and has a very polished overall look. The choice of colours is also great, as the sand blue is a nice change from the primary colours we typically see for cars.

70824 Introducing Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi – Chris’s pick

Maybe it’s the unholy combo of minifigures and mini-dolls. Maybe it’s the giant anthropomorphic banana’s crazy googly-eyes. Or maybe it’s just that this is a glorified character pack with a pedestal, in which everyone is standing around worshipping a rejected concept for Bojack Horseman. Really, it’s hard to point to one thing in particular – every part of this set makes it look like the kind of thing you’d only be able to dream up while on acid, but we are definitely here for it.

It’s not alone in its humanising of food, of course, with 70822 Unikitty’s Sweetest Friends EVER! doing similar things to ice cream cones and chocolate bars. And while it’s a terrifying concept to think about – the chocolate’s already had a bite taken out of him, the poor sod – you just have to forget about any existential consequences and roll with it. Looking at this set, that seems to be the modus operandi of The LEGO Movie 2. Sign us up.

70822 Unikitty’s Sweetest Friends EVER! – Dimitri’s pick

This is a bright, colourful and extremely fun looking set. The mix of pinks and azure pieces work really well and are perfect choices for the overall tea party feeling this set was hoping to create. The printed – at least I hope they are printed – parts on Ice Cream Cone look amazing and the chocolate bar design using reddish brown ingots for the individual chocolate squares is inspired.
I love the little tea trolley with accessories that are included and giving Unikitty an extra printed facial expression is a nice addition. The only downside with this set is that it’s making me really hungry…

70841 Benny’s Space Squad – Daniel’s pick

Typically when a new theme is released the set I end up most looking forward to is near the middle or, more often, the top of the price point pyramid. With these sets though, it is the exact opposite – I literally squealed upon laying eyes on 70841 Benny’s Space Squad. So. Much. Nostalgia.

It isn’t just the fact that we get four classic spacemen with 1980s accurate helmets, it is the format of the set itself. Back when these minifigures were first available they could be purchased in bulk via small minifigure only sets – the precursors to today’s battle packs. This set looks just like one of those old products and takes me right back to being eight years old in the aisles of my local department store. This will be a day one purchase for me.

70828 Pop-Up Party Bus – Jme’s other pick

It is difficult to choose just one, so I am going to cop out and pick two. As much as I love 70829 Emmet and Lucy’s Escape Buggy for its rugged charm, 70828 Pop-Up Party Bus is simply gorgeous. It sports a fun colour palette, and sleek, curvy lines, as well as a nigh completely studless shape. This is one I can’t wait to get my hands on.

An honorable mention goes out to the two sets that come with dark blue velociraptors. The vehicles look great (though they don’t match my two choices here), but the prospect of ever more dinosaurs is exciting.

70823 Emmet’s Thricycle! – Dimitri’s other pick

The first time I saw these new sets I was filled with joy and I can’t help but smile every time I look at them. I really do feel they encompass the core principles of LEGO, creativity, fun and a sense that anything is possible and it’s great to see the LEGO Group embrace this whole heartedly in official sets.

I really love the creativity of this set, I don’t think I have ever seen a vehicle from LEGO that is quite this unique. Repurposed from vehicles found on and around a building site, there is a real childlike wonder to this and it honestly looks like the LEGO designers handed told a child to let their imagination run wild.

The addition of the alien invader for Emmet to battle against and the small gas pump build are nice inclusions, but even without them I would still say this looks like a must have set from this range of sets.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part will be released on February 8, 2019.
