Buildable figures are becoming a part of every theme, and LEGO One Piece’s first sculpture 75643 Tony Tony Chopper is already one of the best – and even better for fans of the anime.
The LEGO Group has completely embraced buildable figures across the current portfolio, and they’ve been an overall success so far. They’re certainly not for everyone but offer standalone display and play experiences based on a beloved character, now including Tony Tony Chopper.
75643 Tony Tony Chopper is one of seven new LEGO One Piece sets launching this August, and it’s one of the best-executed buildable figures we’ve had the pleasure of experiencing. There are a few options for standalone displays in the new LEGO One Piece wave, but Chopper is absolutely the one to keep your eyes on.
This set comes with 577 pieces for £59.99 / $69.99 / €69.99, featuring a Chopper buildable figure, several accessories to use with the figure, and a base. The base even features a print that is cohesive with the printed tile in 75647 Gum-Gum Fruit.
That base is going to be more crucial than you’d expect, though. The Chopper figure is exquisite, with more than enough articulation, accurate proportions, and successful strategies to hide grey joint elements. The only problem lies in the head. The iconic pink top hat is fantastically designed, but it’s a hugely heavy aspect of the build. This causes the figure to struggle to balance, whether standing or sitting.
You can use the provided base to fix this easily, but it admittedly limits the display and play options somewhat. What expands those options are the included accessories. From a backpack to a syringe, several side builds are featured for Chopper to hold or wear. The backpack’s design is genius and securely attaches to the figure while the straps can easily slip over his shoulders.
With everything together, there’s no doubt that 75643 Tony Tony Chopper is well worth the price and one of the best buildable figures to date. That’s despite the accurately large head making it hard to balance when off the base. However, the best feature of this set is in the eyes.
While the character designs between the manga, anime and the live-action aren’t drastically different, Chopper is more realistic than the rest of the Straw Hats to fit the live-action style better. The smaller Chopper minifigure embraces this realistic style (as much as a minifigure can), but the buildable figure has been deliberately designed to retain the features from the anime.
This includes, but is not limited to, cartoon-esque eyes. They add a level of charm to the buildable figure that realistic eyes cannot and finally give fans the anime / manga One Piece set they’ve been looking for.
Look forward to grabbing 75643 Tony Tony Chopper from August 1 at £59.99 / $69.99 / €69.99. It is well worth the asking price and a hidden gem in the new LEGO One Piece wave.
