Which LEGO Classic Space astronaut will we see next?

So many colours, so many opportunities

Which LEGO Classic Space astronaut will we see next?

LEGO Classic Space minifigures continue to be collectable, and yet another has been confirmed for next month, but what will be next?

11374 Arcade Pinball Machine will see the release of a new light blue Classic Space astronaut minifigure and a matching baby figure. You can pick up that set starting on July 1 for LEGO Insiders and July 4 widely.

While we wait for that new model to launch, all that's left to ponder is which colour of Classic Space astronaut will be next. Thankfully, there are quite a few paths for the LEGO Group to take.

The other three from the LEGO Ideas fan vote

The original LEGO Ideas fan vote for 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine allowed fans to pick which two of the five possible astronaut colours would appear in the set. The community chose bright bluish green and warm gold, leaving bright yellowish green, reddish violet and dark azure in the void.

We know that the LEGO Group is willing to make an astronaut minifigure in these colours, and it seems likely that they will do so at some stage. Whether any one of them will be next to appear in a set is unknown.

Light grey or blue's return in Build, Paint and Play!

LEGO Ideas Build Paint and Play-1

The upcoming LEGO Ideas Build, Paint and Play! gift-with-purchase is going to recreate the experience of miniature painting, with the fan design proposing a complete blue astronaut, as well as an unpainted grey minifigure on a sprue.

We don't know what the fan design of the model will look like, but this seems like a good opportunity for the LEGO Group to bring back the blue astronaut in a modern-day set (not counting the damaged Benny minifigure from The LEGO Movie). Alternatively or additionally, this is a chance for a light grey astronaut with the emblem design pre-applied to the sprue. Then, you'd be able to swap the heads for two Classic Space minifigures in one set.

Whether the LEGO Group will include any Classic Space minifigures in this set, as proposed, has yet to be seen, as the build is not yet finalised.

Black's comeback

Another option for the next Classic Space minifigure is simply to bring back the black astronaut. This colour last appeared in 2012 with the updated helmet design, or all the way back in 1986 with the classic helmet. The LEGO Group's current era of nostalgic astronaut minifigures opt for the latter, and the last time the helmet appeared in black was in 1988.

A re-release of this minifigure, complete in a current-day model, would be much appreciated. We know that the LEGO Group is still using this same colour in other elements, too.

Any other complete astronauts in a single set, at last

The LEGO Group may want to use the next Classic Space minifigure release as a chance to include a complete coloured minifigure in a single set. Both the dark blue and light grey astronauts need specific sets and minifigures to be combined to make them, many of which are now retired.

Both would be good contenders for the next Classic Space minifigure, even if you can technically complete them with a big enough budget. The dark blue torso still needs matching hands without swapping them, too.

Entirely new colours

Since air tanks are more versatile than other pieces used in Classic Space minifigures, we've seen a handful of appearances in colours that don't currently correspond to an astronaut. These would be dark orange in 70431 The Lighthouse of Darkness, and pearl dark grey in 70609 Manta Ray Flyer.

The latter would mix particularly well with the pearl gold astronaut from 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine. Both sets have long since been retired, though, and these air tank colours have been, as well.

The most likely contender

LEGO 41843 Elves Castle Classic Space

The most likely contender for the next Classic Space minifigure appearance is not hard to spot. 41843 Family Christmas Tree features the Classic Space helmet and air tanks in bright green, but the torso with the Classic Space emblem has not yet appeared in this colour.

That's all the LEGO Group would need to finish this minifigure, though, which isn't a hard task compared to the rest of this list.
