10307 Eiffel Tower has secret France references

Builders of 10307 Eiffel Tower – the new LEGO Icons set – can find a surprise in the base, but this surprise isn’t just for show.

The LEGO Icons range has received an impressive new set in the form of 10307 Eiffel Tower, a large model of Paris’ most famous attraction. Using 10,001 pieces and measuring 149cm high, it’s a formidable building experience for any LEGO fan.

It also – like all the best LEGO sets – got a few tricks up its sleeve. In an interview with the set’s designer Rok Žgalin Kobe, we get a peek at the underside of the base – and see the red, white and blue elements used in it.

While this is clearly a reference to the French flag, it also – as Kobe explains – serves an important practical purpose during construction. “In this case it would be the French who get the honour [of red, white and blue elements], but there is also nice colours for easy differentiation which makes for a faster build to begin with, because you want to be done with the base quickly so that you can start building the model up”.

LEGO sets sometimes use colourful elements for their interior structure, even when the set itself isn’t all that vibrant. 21317 Steamboat Willie is a recent example; despite its monochrome exterior, its internal structure is a riot of colour. However, it’s relatively rare for these colours to have a deeper meaning – although 76215 Black Panther’s use of purple internal elements could be seen to buck this trend.

In any case, if you’re thinking of adding 10307 Eiffel Tower to your collection, you can be assured of a straightforward building experience – at least to begin with. Look out for it at LEGO.com from November 25, and expect to pay £554.99 / $629.99 / €629.99 for the privilege.
