10497 Galaxy Explorer designers want more LEGO Classic Space sets

The designers behind 10497 Galaxy Explorer want to see every single LEGO Classic Space set reimagined in a similar updated style.

The upcoming LEGO ICONS 10497 Galaxy Explorer is a dream set for fans of the original 1979 version. 497 Galaxy Explorer is remembered with much fondness by LEGO builders of a certain age and it’s reimagining as a 90th Anniversary celebratory set makes perfect sense.

Whilst fans of the original model have been waiting decades for the set to be re-released, two of the designers behind 10497 Galaxy Explorer have revealed that it’s not the only LEGO Classic Space build they’ve been working on. In an interview with Brickset, Mike Psiaki and Milan Madge talked about the upcoming set and how they’ve also been reimagining other iconic builds, such as 6951 Robot Command Centre.

‘Incidentally, we have started on that ourselves! We attempted to reimagine that robot using only the parts from a single 10497 Galaxy Explorer,’ says Psiaki, ‘but that was a bit of a stretch, so we have actually been using two sets instead. I doubt we will ever be able to share official instructions, or even pictures, of that, but I absolutely believe it can be done. I am ready to see every single Classic Space set following this bigger style!’

A previous report also revealed that Psiaki and Madge had to make a number of tough design decisions when creating the updated spaceship, including losing both the classic grey baseplate and moonbase build.

LEGO ICONS 10497 Galaxy Explorer will be blasting off on August 1 for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 and can be pre-ordered from the official online store now.
