Meet the minifigures of LEGO Ideas 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone

The newly revealed LEGO Ideas 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone launches soon with four characters, including the first LEGO Eggman.

Following an appearance physically and digitally respectively in LEGO Dimensions, Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Eggman are back in a new LEGO Ideas set from January 1, joining two other characters receiving their first brick-built iterations as well as another possible minifigure.

LEGO Ideas 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone has been revealed to include a variety of fresh minifigures for the theme, including an updated Sonic, but for those unfamiliar with the blue blur, we’ve got the guide you need for every character in the latest LEGO Ideas creation:

Sonic

For a set based on a franchise named after the classic blue Hedgehog, a Sonic minifigure is included in 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone and has received a minor facelift since his appearance in a LEGO Dimensions level pack.

While the 2017 minifigure represented the modern iteration of the hedgehog, the 2021 version instead reflects the classic design with a rounded pattern on the torso and brand new printing on the side of his shoes, featuring the golden buckle and white strap.

Sonic the Hedgehog is the franchise’s namesake and can harness the power of his speed to dash through levels, saving the citizens of each zone and eventually defeating Dr. Eggman once again.

Dr. Eggman

Dr. Eggman has only ever appeared as a digital bigfig in LEGO Dimensions, though the original fan design for 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone included a brick-built version of the iconic enemy based on his classic design.

The LEGO designers have opted for a slightly different build to that original model in the new LEGO Ideas set, with a curved tile for his pink nose and a printed dome featuring his glasses. A pair of bigfig hands carry over from his original LEGO Dimensions appearance, ready to clutch any of the Chaos Emeralds or even the Phantom Ruby.

In the games, Dr. Eggman is the long-standing enemy of Sonic the Hedgehog and always has a scheme in mind to take over the world, only to be stopped time and time again. Using his intellect, he builds robots and machines of all shapes and sizes.

Crabmeat

Crabmeat is one of the most common enemies throughout the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, with a robotic body with crab-like claws and legs that help it to patrol.

The LEGO version reflects the sprite pictured above, with a variety of red and grey bricks being used to recreate the Badnik, the name for Dr. Eggman’s robots. In the games, destroying a Crabmeat would allow the animal trapped inside to escape, though no such creatures are included in the LEGO Ideas set.

Motobug

The Motobug is another Badnik included in LEGO Ideas 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone, with the design drawing inspiration from a ladybug, but replacing the insect legs with a single, giant wheel.

Like the Crabmeat, the Motobug has an animal trapped inside in the original game, with the only way to defeat it and free them being to have Sonic jump on them in his ball form. The LEGO model for this character uses curved black elements to represent the wheel, which allows it to be placed around the brick-built Green Hill Zone rather than struggling to stand up.

Phantom Ruby?

The press release states that LEGO Ideas 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone features five minifigures, though only four can be seen in the provided images. It mentions the Phantom Ruby alongside the other four characters, though only appears as a single gem piece in the pictures.

Two characters have interacted with the Phantom Ruby throughout the series, with it appearing in Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces as a way to link the story of the two games. The first was both the classic and modern versions of Dr. Eggman, who used the reality-warping powers of the Phantom Ruby to further his goals.

The second was Infinite, a jackal mercenary who acted as one of the main antagonists in Sonic Forces. Only the former is included in the set according to the official images. Whether this is an error or a fifth minifigure is included in LEGO Ideas 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone is unconfirmed at this time.
