You may already have a mini LEGO Slave I in your collection

While 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter is an exciting upcoming LEGO Star Wars release, you might have a tribute to the concept on hand right now.

The LEGO Star Wars theme is one of the LEGO Group’s most reliable product lines, with 2023 offering a mix of original and prequel trilogy sets in its opening months. 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter is the smallest of these sets, recreating Slave I at a smaller scale than we’re used to seeing. The set takes inspiration from TV shows like The Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett, featuring an older Boba in his outfit from those programmes.

Initial looks at the set suggest an impressive model, which can accommodate Boba in both landing and flight modes. However, it turns out one LEGO set already approximates this functionality – and does so at a similar price point.

LEGO model designer James May (not that one) has shared a new interpretation of 31111 Cyber Drone, a LEGO Creator 3-in-1 set from 2011. This set depicts a futuristic spacecraft manned by a robot, with rocket boosters that can rotate in any direction. Spinning these booster components allows for a more battle-ready craft – and the overall look is reminiscent of Slave I’s famous vertical positioning.

You might need to make a tweak or two if you own the set – particularly as it seems the robot has lost its legs to fit in the cockpit as this angle. But it’s evidence that even older LEGO sets have a few new tricks up their sleeve… from a certain point of view.
