Are there too many licensed LEGO themes?

The LEGO Group has announced licensed theme after licensed theme and it raises the question: are there simply too many all at once?

We’re only a quarter of the way into 2025 and the LEGO Group has already announced LEGO Pokémon, Bluey, and One Piece. That’s to say nothing of ongoing licensed sets, like The Lord of the Rings, Animal Crossing, Zelda and old favourites like Star Wars, Marvel, and so on.

That’s all well and good, as many of those licences are popular among fans, but it does often come with a hefty price tag, as two companies (or sometimes even more) need to get their cut from the sales. Quite apart from the price, creativity is what the LEGO Group is about at its core, so at least some homegrown themes and sets are a must.

That’s not to say there aren’t any out there. We just recently shone a spotlight on some in-house sets that are as impressive as any out there, without breaking the bank. Perhaps, then, those in-house LEGO themes are still putting out just as much quality, but it’s being overshadowed by the dominance and sheer volume of licensed themes.

Brick Fanatics‘ Matthew is answering those questions and more in a longer discussion about licensed LEGO themes and their place in the wider LEGO system over on our YouTube channel. Head over and let him know what you think.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
