Avatar’s James Cameron lashes out at the MCU

Avatar director James Cameron has slammed the MCU’s visual effects while promoting Avatar: The Way of Water.

Despite starting the interview by saying that he wouldn’t criticise either the Marvel or DC universes, adding that he “loves those movies”, the director went on to slam the MCU, specifically one of its Big Bads.

“That said, Weta FX, as it’s called now, is the best. Right?” Cameron said in an exclusive interview with Comicbook.com. “Industrial Light and Magic does great work, but when it comes to the kind of emotive facial stuff that we’re doing… Thanos? Come on. Give me a break. You saw [Avatar: The Way of Water]. It’s not even close. It’s what Weta did.”

This isn’t the first time that Cameron has slammed superhero movies, previously criticising how the characters always act like they’re in college in an interview with the New York Times, suggesting that even having kids doesn’t encourage them to grow up. This is clearly a direct comparison to the Avatar sequel, with the main characters of Jake Sully and Neytiri now enjoying family life ten years after the first film.

In the world of LEGO, Avatar can’t really stand up against the MCU, with barely a handful of sets from Avatar to compare to the enormous Marvel theme. Still, if Cameron impresses fans with Avatar: The Way of Water and the following sequels, perhaps the theme will grow somewhat.
