Already on backorder: LEGO Tropical Aquarium makes a splash in the US

LEGO Icons 10366 Tropical Aquarium heads on back order in the US within a day, despite fan pushback on the high price.

Although the initial community reaction to 10366 Tropical Aquarium centred around the high price of £399.99 in the UK, $479.99 in the US, and from €449.99 in Europe, it seemingly hasn't stopped American shoppers from diving in headfirst. The LEGO Icons set is now on back order until December 7 in the US, while remaining in stock as usual for the UK and Europe.

That suggests there has been a bigger pick-up of the set than the LEGO Group, despite the hefty price tag. It's certainly an appealing set in many ways, particular with the wide variety of colours and attention to detail on the marine life.

However, when you compare it to other similarly priced LEGO sets, it does feel like you'd get more bang for your LEGO budget elsewhere. Spend just £30 more, for example, and you could take home the intricately detailed and minifigure-stacked 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell – license and all.

It's led to some in the community questioning how 10366 Tropical Aquarium has sold out, considering the reception was overshadowed by criticism of the price. Of course, we don't know how much stock was available to buy in the US, so it's hard to say just how popular the set is. Still, going on backorder implies it was more popular than anticipated.
