Should the BrickLink Designer Program embrace LEGO Castle completely?

The LEGO BrickLink Designer Program has proven the demand for the LEGO Castle from older fans, offering a tempting path to take in the future.

LEGO Castle's popularity in the BrickLink Designer Program solidified more than ever with Series 4, including more models based on the theme than any other series which then went on to sell out exceedingly fast. Given this and other evidence, it wouldn't be surprising to see the BrickLink team embrace the nostalgic theme completely in the future.

Series 4 was the first round to include two LEGO Castle models – Medieval Seaside Market and Siege Encampment – instead of just one and both were funded within 10 minutes and completely sold out shortly after. That's a common occurrence for the fan-designed Castle creations across the various series but in Series 4 it managed to stay consistent despite there being two expensive models to fund instead of one.

Over a quarter of the submitted builds for Series 7 are based on Castle too, further proving the demand for LEGO Castle from the community, and consequently the financial success it has brought for both fans and BrickLink. Given this, there's a clear path for the BrickLink team to take in a future series that could prove controversial for those who don't enjoy LEGO Castle.

Considering the consistent success of Castle in the BrickLink Designer Program and the trial of two Castle creations in Series 4, an all-Castle series doesn't seem out of the question. This would allow the BrickLink team to let in a more varied array of medieval models from fortresses to siege towers and everything in between, while likely guaranteeing financial success and a sold-out selection.

As much as the BrickLink Designer Program should continue to strive for variety between nostalgic themes, original ideas and more in the five selected projects, the clear demand for LEGO Castle time and time again has to be tempting for the team looking towards the future.

It wouldn't be surprising to see – maybe even as a bonus series alongside the main program – a Castle-only crowdfunding campaign. Offering it as a bonus series alongside the main selection would be ideal, but presents logistical difficulties to produce such models alongside the normal fan-inspired builds. Then again, it taking the place of a standard series would have no logistical issues but may prove unpopular with some enthusiasts who aren't into LEGO Castle.

This is only speculation and the BrickLink Designer Program may even stay on the course it currently is on, continuing the varied series with at most two or three Castle creations each time. Considering everything we've seen so far though, a more complete embrace of LEGO Castle may be in the BrickLink Designer Program's future.
