Calamity Hustle directors opt out of Universal LEGO movie

The next LEGO movie may have hit a bump as its directors have reportedly opted out of the film in favour of Calamity Hustle with Ryan Reynolds.

The director duo, Adam & Aaron Nee of upcoming action comedy Calamity Hustle are taking the helm on the film over a new LEGO movie at Universal Pictures, reports Deadline.

Following a previous rumour that the Nee brothers were taking on a ‘hybrid’ live-action and animation LEGO film after directing 2022’s The Lost City, it’s now believed that they’ve opted for the Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum movie with Warner Bros. instead. It’s also stated that they are putting this project over the Masters of the Universe movie on Netflix.

Part of the reported reason for this change is that the duo wishes to work on an original idea rather than an existing IP and while a new LEGO movie could have a completely original story, it would still be fundamentally based on one of the biggest toys in the world.

Rumours indicated that the directors had signed a deal with Universal Pictures to develop the first picture in its five-year partnership with the LEGO Group, but this report suggests that the studio will need to find at least one director soon, as the partnership started in 2020. It has already been suggested by The LEGO Movie producer Dan Lin that a new LEGO movie is in development in some form too.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
