This custom LEGO Hogwarts could be the template for a rumoured summer set

A new microscale LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts set is said to be on the way in the summer – and it could look a little something like this…

71043 Hogwarts Castle is still on shelves, and not currently due to retire until the end of 2024. But that apparently isn’t stopping the LEGO Harry Potter team from launching a second microscale interpretation of the school of witchcraft and wizardry – at least if the rumour mill is to be believed. 71419 Microscale Hogwarts Castle & Grounds is said to be coming this summer, priced at $159.99 for 2,660 pieces.

That’s some way off 71043 Hogwarts Castle’s price ($469.99) and piece count (6,020), suggesting this second school will be considerably scaled down. But that might also offer the opportunity for the LEGO Harry Potter team to – paradoxically – go even bigger, covering more ground than in the much larger Hogwarts. It’s something the rumoured set alludes to in its mention of the castle grounds, too.

Where the 2018 castle concentrates on building up a huge rendition of Hogwarts’ most iconic buildings, such as the Great Hall, an even smaller-scale model could encompass areas like the Forbidden Forest, the Quidditch Pitch and the Great Lake. For an idea of what that might look like in practice, we only need look to Joshua Wray’s magical microscale Hogwarts build.

Wray published images of his design to Flickr all the way back in February 2018, months before anyone knew what 71043 Hogwarts Castle looked like – but may have inadvertently predicted a future LEGO Harry Potter set in the process. His build is situated on a black base, not dissimilar to those we’ve seen across recent 18+ sets (albeit on a much bigger scale). And it incorporates a far wider picture of Hogwarts than the current microscale model.

Where 71043 Hogwarts Castle has to pick and choose which parts of the castle to replicate, effectively ignoring half of the structure as seen in the films (which Wray has also tackled), this model is able to offer a much more complete recreation of the wizarding school. And if the rumoured LEGO set ends up looking anything like this, it could explain how and why the LEGO Group is choosing to release it alongside the larger set.

That’s because it would naturally offer a very different concept to its bigger sibling, and at a much more accessible price point – one that doesn’t cannibalise your entire LEGO budget, nor require giving up an entire shelf to display it. And in an age of increasingly huge LEGO sets, more affordable alternatives are nothing to sniff at.

76419 Microscale Hogwarts Castle & Grounds is still just a rumour at this stage, so don’t put too much stock in its existence until the LEGO Group officially reveals the rest of the 2023 Harry Potter range. For now, here’s a snapshot of how the Wizarding World theme is shaping up so far this year – including the six brand new sets that have just hit shelves.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
