Don’t expect any LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean sets for a while

The planned Pirates of the Caribbean movie with Margot Robbie is reportedly dead in the water, suggesting this is one licensed LEGO theme we won’t be seeing again soon.

The LEGO Group is currently offering an impressive mix of licensed sets, with upcoming sci-fi movie Avatar: The Way of Water providing us with some thrilling ocean-based sets. Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve had LEGO adventures on the high seas. The LEGO Group launched a dedicated Pirates of the Caribbean theme back in 2011, with beloved ships like the Black Pearl (and villains like Davy Jones) getting the LEGO sets they deserve.

Rumours of a new Pirates sequel (without Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow in the lead role) have been simmering over the last few years, with Harley Quinn actor Margot Robbie reportedly taking the reins. However, a new interview with Vanity Fair suggests that movie is no longer on the horizon. “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” Robbie says in the interview.

As such, if you’ve been holding out hope for a return to Disney’s swashbuckling fantasy realm, those hopes may now be dashed. It’s a particular shame as (barring anniversaries and LEGO Ideas) licensed themes such as Pirates of the Caribbean are usually how we explore LEGO’s older play concepts. It’s also a letdown as Pirates of the Caribbean is a relatively slim theme, with just 15 sets released between 2011 and 2017 – and none of those tying into At World’s End, the franchise’ ponderous third instalment.

However, with Indiana Jones 5 coming soon (and rumours of a revived LEGO Indiana Jones theme) your hunger for high-adventure LEGO tie-ins may be sated yet.
