Early LEGO The New Guardians’ Ship review highlights unique but repetitive build

Early reviews for the LEGO sets based on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 film have started to pop up online, with one citing the largest set’s repetitive build.

In YouTuber just2good’s review of 76255 The New Guardians’ Ship, he both praises and criticises the model while providing a better look at some features and compartments that weren’t as clear in the official images.

In the review, we get a close look at the minifigure selection, which is largely criticised for repeating the same torso and leg prints across all but one of the figures. The Adam Warlock minifigure, on the other hand, appears to be a highlight. The pearl gold elements look terrific, and just2good says that the figure ‘really nails the face of the actor, Will Poulter’.

The ship itself–called the Bowie in the film but presumably changed to this more generic name for the LEGO set due to licensing issues–is praised for its interesting design and stark color scheme. just2good says the ship ‘feels more like something out of a new LEGO space theme than something out of Star Wars’, which is a good sign for anyone looking to diversify their LEGO spaceship collection.

The build is ‘incredibly symmetrical’ and ‘expectedly repetitive’, though, with the only difference between the circular top and bottom sections being two katana elements. Any builders that are particularly bothered by seeing the dreaded ‘2x’ show up in LEGO instruction booklets can be properly warned to pass on this set, but this is just2good’s only criticism of the ship build itself.

The review provides a better look at the ship’s storage compartments, which feature enough room in the top cockpit to hold three minifigures as well as one extra minifigure lying down in the well-concealed bottom cockpit. There are also four compartments that can hold one weapon each, which is exactly enough for all of the minifigure accessories in the set (as long as Star-Lord is only carrying one of his guns).

just2good still recommends the set at the end of the review, calling it ‘extremely detailed, sturdy, and strange in the best way possible’.

LEGO Marvel 76255 The New Guardians’ Ship launches on April 1 for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99.
