First look at LEGO Hill Climb Adventures gameplay

Fingersoft’s new video game LEGO Hill Climb Adventures is in open beta now, and gameplay footage is already turning up on YouTube.

The open beta for LEGO Hill Climb Adventures – a mobile game based on the hit Hill Climb Racing series from Finnish developer Fingersoft – is underway now in Vietnam and Poland, exclusively on Android devices. The full game will also be available through the App Store on iOS when it launches globally, though a wide release date has yet to be confirmed.

The physics-based racing game involves navigating side-scrolling terrain with a brick-built vehicle, and YouTuber LEGIT BOSS HCR2 has already published early footage of LEGO Hill Climb Adventures in beta.

As expected, the game is effectively a reskin of the classic Hill Climb Racing formula: drive from left to right, perform tricks, collect coins and avoid running out of fuel or hitting your driver’s head. It’s a simple premise, but one that looks to mix pretty well with the LEGO aesthetic. Environments and vehicles are now three-dimensional, with obstacles and objects constructed from virtual LEGO bricks.

You’re also collecting LEGO studs and bricks rather than coins (in a nod to TT Games’ LEGO video games), which can be used to unlock new vehicles and areas by literally building blueprints and bridges to access new areas of the map. These touches make the game feel far more thematic than at first glance, so it’ll be interesting to see how Fingersoft builds on that by the time the game launches proper.

All of the stages in this early footage are themed around farms, but the final game will presumably include a range of different environments, much like Hill Climb Racing 2. You can check out the teaser trailer here.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
