First trailer for The Marvels highlights the body-swap storyline

The first teaser trailer for The Marvels, coming November 10, has been released, featuring the three main heroes swapping places every time they use their powers.

Brie Larson returns as Captain Marvel following her debut in the 2019 film of the same name, but this time she’s joined by stars from two Marvel Studios Disney+ streaming series. Teyonah Parris reprises her role as Monica Rambeau from WandaVision and Iman Vellani returns as Kamala Khan from Ms. Marvel. The trailer also features Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in what seems like a sizable role.

This movie marks the big-screen debut for Ms. Marvel and the entire Khan family, but Rambeau has already appeared (as a child) in the first Captain Marvel film. Goose, the cute, cat-like alien with a horrific tentacled mouth, also makes her triumphant return while consuming several bad guys to save Kamala.

The trailer doesn’t show too much of the film’s main plot, but does prominently feature the main gimmick of the story this time around: whenever one of the three main heroes uses their superpowers, they swap places with another one of the three. Rather than a traditional body-swap where characters’ minds switch between each others’ bodies, the swap here seems to be only spatial, with the characters remaining themselves but switching physical locations.

The body-swap trope obviously lends itself mostly to comedy, which the trailer doesn’t shy away from – but this physical swap can create some interesting action as well, which we catch a small glimpse of towards the end of the trailer. The characters are fighting a villain and are swapping back and forth quickly while doing so.

Speaking of villains, there is a small glimpse of Zawe Ashton’s character, who holds Ronan the Accuser’s Universal Weapon in one shot. This may reveal her character as the next Kree Accuser, but there’s no confirmation yet.

One LEGO set based on The Marvels has been rumoured, retailing for €89.99 with only 420 pieces. The low piece count relative to the price may have some concerned, but this same price point has been common across the LEGO Marvel line for sets with a similar piece count, such as 76216 Iron Man Armory or 76214 Black Panther: War on the Water. Both of those sets featured a number of exclusive minifigures, so it’s reasonable to assume this set will as well, with at least the three main heroes surely represented.
