Let’s hope Star Wars prequel fans prefer LEGO BrickHeadz to minifigures

With the reveal of LEGO BrickHeadz 40676 The Phantom Menace, we’ve got our fingers crossed that Star Wars prequel fans prefer BrickHeadz to minifigures.

40676 The Phantom Menace includes six buildable characters: Jar Jar Binks, young Anakin Skywalker, Queen Amidala, Captain Panaka, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Darth Maul. While this is a diverse and logical range of characters, missing only Obi-Wan Kenobi from the core line-up of The Phantom Menace (who you can pick up in 40547 Obi-Wan Kenobi & Darth Vader in any case), it does mean that we’re set to get more LEGO BrickHeadz based on prequel characters than minifigures in 2024.

This is despite the fact that 2024 is the 25th anniversary not just of LEGO Star Wars but of The Phantom Menace as a movie. It feels like it would have been the prime opportunity to flesh out the line-up of prequel minifigures. Indeed, it’s not like there aren’t any obvious gaps; we’re still waiting for a Shmi Skywalker minifigure, for example, and plenty more characters haven’t had a revamp in too long.

The LEGO Star Wars team hasn’t steered clear of prequel sets in general, to be clear. As well as 40676 The Phantom Menace, we’ve also recently had reveals of other era-specific sets like 75377 Invisible Hand, 75380 Mos Espa Podrace Diorama, 75381 Droideka, and 75383 Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator.

Unfortunately, only one of these includes minifigures: 75383 Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator, featuring Darth Maul, Anakin Skywalker, and Qui-Gon Jinn, as well as an exclusive LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary Saw Gerrera minifigure. That means we are set to have just three prequel minifigures, in comparison to the six BrickHeadz figures, unless the LEGO Star Wars team have any Shmi-shaped surprises up their sleeves.

Of course, 2024 is a busy year in the world of LEGO Star Wars so it’s hard to fit everything on. Perhaps we’ll need to wait for 2025 and the 20th anniversary of Revenge the Sith for the prequel minifigure selection of our dreams.
