While 71040 The Disney Castle may be out of stock again, the latest LEGO Disney is available at LEGO.com43179 Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Buildable Characters. In this new video shared by the LEGO Group on YouTube, Model Designer Ollie Gregory reveals his process when designing this 1,739 piece set.

“When designing a set like this, it’s always important to look at reference,” says Ollie. “In this case we looked at a lot of the original Mickey and Minnie shorts back from the 20s and 30s as well as some of the original character sheets from the Disney archive. From that we can take a look at our existing elements, see what we have that kind of matches the shapes that they have.

“In the case we started with Mickey’s legs, we had some fantastic elements that worked great for his shoes, and then we found that the Fabuland bucket piece worked perfectly for Minnie’s shorts. During development, the hardest part for design was getting them to stand. The weight distribution for both of them is in the body and in the head, which is quite high up, so we worked really hard top get them to be sturdy on the bases and retain their whimsical poses.”
