How LEGO The Lord of the Rings Barad-dûr got made

Tune in now for our interview with the designers who brought the newly-revealed LEGO Icons 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr to life.

Matthew and I had the chance to sit down with LEGO designers Antica Bracanov and Ashwin Visser, two of the people responsible for the latest LEGO The Lord of the Rings set, in Billund last September to chat all things Barad-dûr. From the model’s modular approach to creating the first-ever Sauron minifigure, between them the duo take a deep dive into every facet of the tower.

You can check out the interview in full by hitting play below or heading over to our YouTube channel. Antica and Ashwin have plenty to say on the development process behind 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr, giving us fascinating insights into the model’s timeline, the way they tackled an overwhelmingly black build to stop details getting lost, and much more besides.

The LEGO Group officially revealed 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr today, confirming it will launch on June 1 for LEGO Insiders and June 4 for everyone else for £399.99 / $469.99 / €469.99. That’s just a little bit cheaper than last year’s 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, and Sauron’s stronghold has a slightly lower piece count as a result, coming in at 5,471 parts.

Early adopters will receive 40693 The Lord of the Rings: Fell Beast for free between June 1 and 7 (while stocks last). I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

How unenthusiastic do these designers come across?!
Also, really disappointing GWP, after so much expectation.
And what did they do to Gollum?! :o)))))) :o))))))
