LEGO Jurassic World 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex manages to look like a delicate display of bones – but it's stronger than it looks.
Some LEGO sets can be delicate at the best of times but a sprawling display of brick-built bones feels like it would be especially so. However, LEGO designer Benjamin Liboriussen made sure that this wasn't the case while designing 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex, due for release on March 15 for £219.99 / $249.99 / €249.99.
Speaking to LEGO Fan Media at a recent roundtable, Benjamin explained how 'the whole structure itself was a challenge' – but that hard work has paid off in a surprisingly sturdy build, confirmed when Brick Fanatics' Chris had it for an early review.
"We knew that we needed to make this strong and stable," said Benjamin."We tried to use the black colour [on the pillars] to create that negative space, in the hope of creating this shadow effect to the skeleton. There were other versions that we explored, wondering whether it could stand [without support ] but then the legs were very thick."

The pillars remained, meaning you can easily pick up and move the set without needing to touch any of the delicate-looking bones. Even if you do start messing with the actual dino, however, you should be able to do so without worries of undoing any of your painstaking building work.
"You should hold the set at the pillars, that's what we advise," Benjamin stated. "But, in theory, you can take it by the rib cage and move it around and it won't break because it slots in using the feet. With the feet locking it down at the bottom, it really helps to create that triangle strength to make it as stable as possible.
"That was a challenge, and that took some trial and error to make sure parts don't fall off when you want to move it."
76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex will be available ton buy from March 12 for LEGO Insiders (and March 15 for everyone else) at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores, retailing at £219.99 in the UK, $249.99 in the US and €249.99 in Europe.
