LEGO 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90, but downsized

LEGO Icons 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 launches soon, though a custom creation has imagined the vehicle at the scale of Speed Champions

Arriving on April 1, 2023, for VIP members or April 4 for everyone, 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 is the second Land Rover build following Technic’s 42110 Land Rover. However, both models are undoubtedly large and besbasdesign would prefer a smaller Land Rover set. 

At just eight studs wide compared to the 18 of 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90, the Rebrickable user’s custom creation is based on the LEGO Icons set but uses 483 pieces instead of 2,336. 

The size puts it on a similar scale to LEGO Speed Champions, but it keeps the accessories and details featured in 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90. The shaping of the midsection curve is more pronounced than it is in real life, though you can still recognise the appearance of the car.

Preceding the reveal of the LEGO Icons set, two other custom LEGO Land Rover Classic Defenders were devised, both at a similar scale to Speed Champions

From over a year ago, Custom creations’ version has a much different design to besbasdesign’s with an opening hood as well. It too opts to recreate the curved mid-section that makes the upper half of the cabin thinner than the bottom half, but only over half a stud instead of a whole one. This may be due to part limitations as the more recent model uses the rarer sand-green for much of its parts. 

Both before and after the reveal of 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90, it’s interesting to see how this vehicle has been approached at a smaller scale. However, the upcoming LEGO Icons set is considerably bigger than either and can be purchased from April 1, 2023, for £209.99 / $239.99 / €239.99.
