LEGO 11021 90 Years of Play’s Tahu is getting some new friends
Cult LEGO BIONICLE character Tahu – which appeared this year in a new form – may soon have the perfect companions in a new LEGO set.
2022 marked the LEGO Group’s 90th anniversary, with a variety of LEGO products released in honour of the occasion. One of the more reasonably priced is 11021 90 Years of Play, a LEGO Classic set that recreated sets from across LEGO history.
While there were a number of respectable models to be built here, the LEGO Group’s take on Tahu won several fans. Tahu is a character from the popular BIONICLE theme (first launched in the early ’00s) which offered LEGO fans a range of biomechanical action figures. 11021 90 Years of Play’s take bore little resemblance to the original figure, but its charms won over LEGO fans regardless.
Now it seems that figure’s distinctive blocky aesthetic may pay off, thanks to another LEGO Classic set releasing in 2023. 11031 Creative Monkey Fun allows LEGO fans to build a variety of cheeky monkeys, with differing heights, body shapes and facial expressions possible with the included pieces.
The monkeys bear a striking resemblance to LEGO Classic Tahu, which means – if you’re looking to build a bigger LEGO scene with these characters – they’re ideal companions, particular as no similar BIONICLE characters have appeared in an official set. The similarity in appearance isn’t a coincidence: both are the creation of LEGO designer George Gilliatt, who has apparently been waiting for someone to notice the connection.
As such, if you’ve been looking to build upon 11021 90 Years of Play, 11031 Creative Monkey Fun may be just what you’re after – particularly when Tahu’s home of Mata Nui is partially covered in jungle. 11021 90 Years of Play is available now from LEGO.com, while 11031 Creative Monkey Fun will be available from January 1, 2023. The latter product will set you back £8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99, which may tempt a few different LEGO fans into a purchase.
