LEGO 11503 Flower Wall is best when bought again and again

LEGO Botanicals has melded with Art to create something charming and versatile, but it’s a shame it’s not more accessibly customisable.

The LEGO Group’s various floral builds are among the most popular of all its offerings, reaching an audience far beyond the hardcore adult fanbase. 11503 Flower Wall offers a brand new way to display Botanicals sets, and comes with some beautiful flowers that can be swapped out and customised with flowers from other sets in the collection. The only real downside is that getting really creative requires buying multiple copies of this model.

There’s only really one problem with LEGO Botanical Collection 11503 Flower Wall: there’s not enough of it in the box.

To be clear, this is a very tongue-in-cheek complaint: any time a LEGO set leaves fans wanting more, it’s generally a good sign. Certainly, the included flowers feel like a complete set in their own right, and the piece count is on the larger side for one of these sets (even though similarly sized builds like 10313 Wildflower Bouquet come in significantly cheaper). All in all, this is a satisfying experience that feels like a complete package – unless you spend too long looking at the back of the box or at the last few pages of the instruction booklet.

Viewer beware: this set is dangerously more-ish.

Many photos of 11503 Flower Wall show off not one, but two copies of the set, combined. This is suggested in the instruction booklet, and the set even comes with a handful of Technic pieces to combine two sets together. In theory, a LEGO fan could add more and more and more of these sets together to create increasingly elaborate floral displays that hang nicely on a wall.

Things could go further. Why simply display the same few flowers that are included in this set? Why not swap out some flowers, replacing them with builds from other Botanical Collection sets? Why not use this wall display to complement a LEGO Art set? They do pair very well together.

This model, then, is dangerously addictive. The LEGO Group provided two copies of this set for review, and even hanging these together on the wall, it was hard for this reviewer to ignore the desire for at least another two, to expand things further and further.

The genius of hanging LEGO flowers on a trellis system is likely to have a far-reaching impact on how fans engage with the Botanical Collection as a whole. This ‘artification’ of the theme removes the main drawback of a lot of these floral sets: the need to find a shelf or table to display them on (and potentially a vase, depending on the build).

A lot of new LEGO fans have come to this hobby through the Botanical sets, and these wall displays provide an easy way for these fans to begin customising their models and creating their own floral arrangements.

It’s unfortunate, then, that the part of the build that makes it possible, the trellis, is not available separately. At the moment, the LEGO Group expects fans to drop a not insignificant amount of money on multiple copies of this set, where, for those who really want to get their green thumbs dirty creating their own displays, it might be helpful for the trellis to be sold separately as a wall mounting expansion kit.

If you’re reading this review, there’s a good chance you know how to go about sourcing these bricks yourself – a quick trip to BrickLink or a similar website, and you’ll be able to create your own trellis expansion. The same can’t be said for a lot of people who will be drawn towards this set and who might not be quite as familiar with the LEGO fandom. One can only hope that in future, the LEGO Group makes the trellis part of this build a bit more accessible for LEGO laity.

It’s worth mentioning again that the biggest drawback of this set is that it teases the builder with the possibility of more. Any LEGO set that provides such an interesting and exciting canvas for creativity is easy to recommend. This is a perfect example of the kind of ingenuity and creativity that led to the creation of the Botanical Collection in the first place – just be prepared for your wallet to take a hit if you end up going all-in with 11503 Flower Wall. To make the most of this set, you’re going to need to buy it more than once.

Our honest opinion: 11503 Flower Wall is an exciting, if dangerously addictive, evolution for the Botanical Collection, although there are probably cheaper ways to get its unique selling point for LEGO fans who know where to look.

When I was a kid, my bus ride home from school featured a daily stop at LEGOLAND Windsor. The bus drove all the way up to the front gate, let eager tourists on and off, then drove back out of the park and on its merry way. Maybe if I’d got on a different bus every afternoon I’d have ended up with a proper job, but then, there’s no way of knowing for sure.
