LEGO Magnolia Branches: plant perfection, or a flower too far?
LEGO Botanicals picks up the pace this March with 11510 Magnolia Branches, but have we reached plant perfection, or are these a flower too far? Spoilers: it’s a little bit of both.
We’re half a decade into the LEGO Botanicals theme/collection at this point, so it’s as good a time as any to take stock and see how far the sets have come in that time. And there’s probably no better example of that evolution in design direction than 11510 Magnolia Branches, which stands in stark contrast to 2021’s 10280 Flower Bouquet for better and worse.

As Rob first highlighted in his review of 10328 Bouquet of Roses last year, the Botanicals theme has gradually shifted from the gimmick of using existing LEGO pieces in unusual ways – Demogorgon heads for Orchid buds, purple pirate hats for lupin flowers and so on – to focus more heavily on realism. But in 11510 Magnolia Branches, we’ve reached the realism endgame, and in effect traded one gimmick for another.
Yes, there are still fun part uses here, and they blend into the build in superior ways – spot the yellow hubcaps, green eggs and brown frogs, to give just a few examples – but what first draws your eye is of course those two-tone petals. The instruction manual for the set recounts how the designers tried a bunch of different ways to build magnolias, before eventually landing on this proprietary solution: a relatively new leaf piece moulded in a gradient from white to pink.

From an aesthetic perspective it doesn’t get much better than this. The finished bouquet of branches is eye-catching, colourful and accurate to the real thing almost to a fault. And that fault line, if you’re searching for it, is where the ingenuity of LEGO gets left behind in pursuit of authenticity. Make no mistake: there is innovation here, but it’s within element design rather than set design. And within the context of LEGO flowers, there’s something weirdly unsatisfying about just cooking up specific pieces for individual use cases.
It’s a tricky thing to take issue with because, again, the result is another stand-out Botanicals set in a year that’s already full of them. Popped in a vase these look completely convincing… but then they should given the shortcut taken to get there. Whether that will matter to you rests pretty much entirely on whether you value the journey over the destination in your LEGO sets.

For what it’s worth, 11510 Magnolia Branches’ journey also falls victim to revealing all its surprises only a quarter of the way through. There are slight variations in each of the branches, but not in the pieces used, so by the time you’ve assembled one it has little else to offer from a build perspective. That’s again not necessarily a criticism because it can hardly be avoided in a set like this, but it’s worth noting if you’re planning to tackle it alone. For best results, split the two included instruction manuals between yourself and a pal.

If you’re just looking for some pretty LEGO flowers for your budding botanical display and don’t want to think about it beyond that, 11510 Magnolia Branches is a pretty easy recommendation. But if you got into LEGO Botanicals for the clever parts usage and varied builds, this is probably not one to add to your shopping list day one. And no matter: there are already plenty more to choose from in 2026…
Our honest opinion: 11510 Magnolia Branches is one of the best-looking Botanicals sets yet, but it loses a little of the LEGO DNA in the process.
