LEGO Technic 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica review

The latest LEGO Technic collaboration with a racing giant speeds into view, but is 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica a championship set?

There have been many LEGO models released over the years that have shone a spotlight on the world of motor racing, with six to date focusing on vehicles designed and created by Lamborghini. The last such set was 76908 Lamborghini Countach, which arrived as a Speed Champions build in 2022. Now the LEGO Group has once again partnered with the iconic Italian sports car manufacturer to deliver its latest Technic model, 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica.

The current version of the now nine-year-old real-life vehicle was designed as a ‘bridge between worlds’, combining performance and beauty in a supercar that proudly shows its racing DNA on its sleeve. The final series-production model of the Huracán to be released before it’s replaced by an all-new hybridised supercar is certainly going out with a bang.

42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica speeds across the finish line with an 806-piece build resplendent in a distinctive classic lime green colour scheme that rivals its big brother, 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37, for pure garishness.

— LEGO Technic 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica build —

Aimed at a 9+ audience, 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica isn’t the most-detailed LEGO Technic set, but it still offers plenty of bang for its buck. Coming in at a reasonable 806 pieces, the supercar has been recreated as a scaled-down version of the eye-catching racer, one that manages to accurately capture the overall look of the real-life vehicle.

As is the norm with almost any LEGO Technic build, you’ll spend most of your time pushing in multiple pin pieces until your fingers ache, although the rewards are mostly worth it. The interior of 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica is primarily comprised of black and grey elements, which reflect the sleek interior stylings of the full-size supercar. One specific highlight comes in the form of the model’s V10 engine, connected as it is to the rear wheels with brown axle 5L with stop pieces representing the 10 pistons that move up and down as the car is pushed along.

Squint and you’ll recognise the overall shape of the real-life racer in its reduced LEGO Technic form, although it’s not without some shortcomings. While 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica shares many of the same pieces as 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37, the smaller size of this build inevitably means that some of the form and function of the larger set is lost in translation.

The steering wheel in this LEGO Technic set is merely there for decorative effect, with the front wheels of the car manually turned via a black gear element located on the roof. Its placement on top of the Lamborghini does take away some of the smooth racing lines of the vehicle, despite limited access to the interior dash area of the supercar necessitating the repositioning of any such control mechanism.

That’s not to say 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica is lacking in any functionality though, it’s just that what is included is fairly limited. For instance, the two side doors of the car can be opened and closed, but they’re quite wobbly sections and can be pushed too far into the interior before eventually stopping. Likewise, opening the doors fully feels as if they could become detached with too much pressure, although that’s not really an issue for some builders who may just want to have the set as a static display piece.

The bonnet (or hood) of 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica can also be opened up if you so choose, but there’s not much to look at inside other than to check to see if you’ve managed to correctly assemble the front of the supercar’s wheelbase. The rear spoiler is static, but that matches the look of the real-life vehicle, with the exterior element acting to increase downforce on the car.

There’s also not much to speak of when it comes to the interior of 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica, with a simple dash display and two black seats that can be angled and repositioned as required. There’s no gearstick, handbrake or pedals, but once again the size of the model kind of makes such features redundant.

On the plus side, stickers are kept to a minimum, with 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica only including one such sheet to be applied. As usual, the placement of some stickers on smaller pieces can be slightly fiddly, but there aren’t any that would frustrate most modelmakers. The iconic Lamborghini badge is displayed on the front of the supercar, with a few stickers on the dash, on top of the V10 engine and on the rear above the two exhausts, although you can’t help feeling that those could have all been printed pieces.

The completed 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica is solid enough and lacks the fragility that sometimes accompanies larger LEGO Technic models. Considering its primary target audience, there are undoubtedly many petrolheads who will delight in having a scaled version of the world-famous vehicle on their bedroom shelves, even if it’s one that does sacrifice some form and function for price and piece count.

— LEGO Technic 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica price —

For its size and considering the licensed nature of the build, 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica is priced at a reasonable £46.99 / $49.99 / €52.99. For that you’ll get an 806-piece scaled model that should satisfy supercar fans of all ages.

The LEGO Technic set isn’t the most complicated to construct or the most accurate, but the cost of the model securely places it in the affordable birthday/Christmas bracket and will undoubtedly speed on to many racing fans’ wish lists.

— LEGO Technic 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica pros and cons —

As a scale model of the real-life supercar, 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica offers a fairly satisfying building experience that won’t come at a wallet-busting price. The LEGO Technic set mostly manages to recreate the look and feel of the real-life vehicle, despite some limitations.

The lack of functioning steering (via the steering wheel) and some slightly flimsy sections could be off-putting for some racing fans and modelmakers, but the set’s target audience should be more than satisfied with the finished results.

Fortunately there are very few stickers to be applied and the recognisable lime green colour scheme contrasts really well with the sleek black interior of the vehicle. 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica should manage to tick plenty of boxes for a variety of builders looking for both a short-term construction challenge and a satisfying completed display piece.
