LEGO Star Wars 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter review

75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter fills a surprising gap in the LEGO Star Wars line-up, but fails to seize the low-hanging fruit that could have made it a must-have.

There’s a Slave I – sorry, Boba Fett’s Starship – at almost every imaginable scale by now, from micro-models in advent calendars all the way up through mid-sized builds (75312 Boba Fett’s Starship, 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City) to the true minifigure-scale behemoth that is the Ultimate Collector Series 75060 Slave I. A version at Microfighter scale (or thereabouts) does actually exist already, given away at Star Wars Celebration in 2012, but it’s extremely hard to come by.

LEGO Star Wars 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter therefore plugs one of the few remaining gaps in the Slave I collection for most of us. But for lacking one small change, it’s probably not going to find many fans.

— Where to buy LEGO Star Wars 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter —

LEGO Star Wars 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter is available to buy from LEGO.com, in LEGO Stores and through third-party retailers. It’s cheap enough that you won’t really need to wait for a discount, though.

All credit to the LEGO Star Wars design team: it can’t be easy to make a tiny build like this genuinely interesting, but they’ve managed it. It’ll be over in a flash for all but the youngest builders, but within that moment of creativity comes an engaging construction process that twists bricks in all directions to capture Slave I’s unique hull, complete with rotating stabiliser fins.

This is a Microfighter, so we’re not looking for total accuracy, but more a cute approximation of the on-screen ship. And that’s what we get: you won’t strain to recognise this in the same way you sort of had to squint at 75321 The Razor Crest Microfighter, and the return of flick-fire missiles – easily swapped out for more static cannons if you prefer – is a good reminder that this is still just a toy.

75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter is also slightly unique among the wider range of Microfighters for having its minifigure actually look like it’s flying the thing, rather than sitting on top of a kids’ ride, but that’s really more a consequence of the source material than anything else. It absolutely works for this set, though.

75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter includes – who else – Boba Fett. But this is where the set really lets itself down: it’s 2023, and we’re still getting the same basic and inaccurate post-Return of the Jedi version of Boba we’ve been getting since 2021. This was a perfect opportunity to recolour Boba’s helmet and jetpack in dark green – such an easy change that would have turned this model from ‘meh’ to ‘must-have’.

As is, the only real reason to pick up this set is if you don’t already own 75312 Boba Fett’s Starship or 75326 Boba Fett’s Throne Room. And even then, you’ll need to supply your own rangefinder…

— LEGO Star Wars 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter price —

Microfighters are to Star Wars what one-man mechs are to Marvel, so – while the price of those suits of armour rises to £12.99 / $14.99 / €14.99 – it’s nice to see 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter coming in at a consistent £8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99. That this is one of the best Microfighters in recent memory makes it an easy impulse purchase (especially if you don’t already have the minifigure).

— LEGO Star Wars 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter pros and cons —

The LEGO Star Wars team genuinely was on the verge of greatness with 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter: it’s a solid rendition of Slave I that slots very neatly into the wider Microfighter range, while plugging another gap in the long list of LEGO Firespray-class ships.

But just like 75321 The Razor Crest Microfighter before it, this has ultimately ended up as a means to repackage and resell a minifigure most of us likely have by now. Beskar Mando has popped up in seemingly every other set since 75299 Trouble on Tatooine, and given the price point of 75312 Boba Fett’s Starship, this (still inaccurate) version of the bounty hunter wasn’t exactly hard to come by.

If the LEGO Group had just taken the plunge and colour-corrected Boba Fett, we’d be having an entirely different conversation right now, using words and phrases like ‘must-have’ and ‘buy it right now’. As is, it’s one for Slave I and Microfighters collectors only.

— Alternatives to LEGO Star Wars 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter —

There’s not much else from LEGO Star Wars at this price point to recommend in place of 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter: its closest companion, 75321 The Razor Crest Microfighter, is retiring at the end of 2022. If you want to keep on theme but have a slightly higher budget, aim for 75312 Boba Fett’s Starship. If you have a much bigger budget, seek out 75243 Slave I – 20th Anniversary Edition or even 75060 Slave I on the aftermarket. There’s a Slave I at every scale.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
