LEGO Marvel 76277 War Machine Mech Armor review

Joining the LEGO Marvel mech line-up for 2024 is 76277 War Machine Mech Armor, a heavy metal bruiser in more ways than one.

The LEGO Group’s mech-based offerings can often be quite divisive sets, sometimes delivering something fans never knew they wanted but often providing yet more head-scratching models. An example of the latter would be 76996 Knuckles’ Guardian Mech, with Sonic the Hedgehog’s pal stomping around in an oversized robotic version of himself for no apparent reason other than because he can.

While there have been numerous LEGO Marvel mechs released over the years, most of those builds have also fallen into the same trap of offering up a version of a fan-favourite character who doesn’t really belong in their own giant-sized metal suit.

76277 War Machine Mech Armor arrived on January 1, 2024 alongside 76276 Venom Mech Armor vs. Miles Morales with both sets offering up similar mech-based builds. With the former giving Colonel James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes the chance to shine in the spotlight at last, does the LEGO Marvel model manage to successfully deliver its payload?

76277 War Machine Mech Armor is available to buy from LEGO.com, LEGO Stores and third-party retailers.

— LEGO Marvel 76277 War Machine Mech Armor build —

Assembling 76277 War Machine Mech Armor is a simple enough process, with a completed torso attached to the figure’s bulky arms and legs. Despite the set featuring primarily grey and silver pieces, the model’s potentially drab colour scheme actually works quite well, with a handful of red elements acting as highlights across the build.

There’s also quite a lot of poseability in the finished figure, with ball and socket joints allowing for arms, legs and feet to be placed in a number of positions and the waist, although there’s a lack of any flexibility when it comes to the model’s elbows and knees.

Likewise, 76277 War Machine Mech Armor’s fingers and thumbs can be moved and even fully opened up to reveal ruby red repulsors in each hand. As befits the set’s name, the figure also comes loaded for bear with a total of three stud shooters, one on its shoulder and one on each forearm. Extra ammunition can be supplied via a removable storage box on the back of the mech, with room for four such pieces within.

As with most LEGO mechs, the chest area of 76277 War Machine Mech Armor folds down to reveal a cockpit area inside. There’s plenty of room for the included Rhodey minifigure, although you’ll need to place the character in a seated position in order to close the hatch back up again.

A flexible hose snakes down from the shoulder cannon to an area at the back of the mech, with the piece fortunately being plenty long enough so as not to get in the way during battles or hamper display options. In fact, when it comes to showing off just how dynamic 76277 War Machine Mech Armor can be, the pictures in this review should give you some idea of the wide range of movement that’s possible with this LEGO Marvel set.

The good news is there are no pesky stickers included with 76277 War Machine Mech Armor and just one printed piece attached to the chest of the build. That’s yet another plus in the favour of this MCU set, one that successfully manages to give fans a logical extension of the character’s armour for a pocket money price.

As you’d expect, 76277 War Machine Mech Armor comes with a minifigure of Colonel James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes and the good news here is that this is an exclusive variant. While the character’s double-sided head print, alternate hair piece and helmet element have been seen before, the minifigure boasts an all-new printed torso, legs and faceplate.

Fine detail is excellent here, although it’s a pity that most of the time the character will most likely be hidden away by the mech’s closed chest plate. Having said that, purchasing 76277 War Machine Mech Armor is a great way to add an updated version of Rhodey to your collection, a character that’s usually only available in much larger and more expensive sets.

What’s not to like? 76277 War Machine Mech Armor retails for £12.99 in the UK, $14.99 in the US and €14.99 in Europe, making the LEGO Marvel model an affordable and pocket money-priced purchase.

The set also includes more pieces than almost every other LEGO Marvel mech released to date at that price point. When you buy the build, you should really feel as if you’re getting your money’s worth, with the cost of the set definitely proving to be a real incentive to buy it.

— LEGO Marvel 76277 War Machine Mech Armor pros and cons —

Despite being more of a secondary character in the MCU, 76277 War Machine Mech Armor allows the armoured hero to finally step into the spotlight at last. The LEGO Marvel set delivers an affordable build with plenty of poseability and play options, as well as an exclusive and desirable Colonel James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes minifigure.

While it’s easy to pick fault with some lack of flexibility and movement in the elbows and knees, that doesn’t really matter at this scale. 76277 War Machine Mech Armor does just what it says on the tin and then some, with a must-have brick-built rendition of the heavy metal Marvel hero. Bonus points too for the fact that this is perhaps the most logical of all the LEGO Marvel mechs to date…
