LEGO advent calendars rumoured to be getting another price increase in 2023

This year’s LEGO advent calendars are rumoured to be even more expensive than last year’s – despite several of them lingering on sale through official channels in 2022.

The LEGO Group’s annual licensed advent calendars, which now extend to Star Wars, Harry Potter and Marvel, remained firm at £24.99 / $39.99 / €29.99 for around a decade, before increasing in price to £29.99 / $44.99 / €34.99 in 2022. StoneWars now reports that this year’s LEGO Marvel advent calendar – supposedly numbered 76267 – will jump in price again to €37.99 in Europe.

Given the Marvel, Star Wars and Harry Potter calendars have all traditionally come in at the same price point (at least for the last few years when they’ve arrived on shelves together), it’s not unfair to infer that the same price increase could befall the other licensed LEGO advent calendars, too – at least if this rumour is true.

That unusual price tag (the LEGO Group historically deals in denominations of five and 10) tallies with some of the RRPs we’re already seeing for summer 2023 sets, like 75361 Spider Tank, which will retail for £46.99 in the UK and €52.99 in Europe. We could therefore see this year’s licensed calendars increase to £26.99 or £27.99 in the UK, matching the rumoured price increase in Europe.

And if that European price is accurate, it suggests the LEGO Group could be uniformly increasing some of its usual price points by a couple of pounds and euros on this side of the Atlantic. The company already raised prices on a wide number of its existing products in the second half of 2022, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see it pushing the needle even further in 2023.

What’s interesting to note with the calendars in particular, though, is that the Marvel and Harry Potter sets in 2022 were heavily discounted at LEGO.com in January, suggesting the LEGO Group had plenty of surplus stock to shift. If those sets weren’t selling at £24.99 / €29.99, will this year’s fare better with a price bump? That will likely depend on their contents – and whether the market can continue to sustain five different LEGO advent calendars, with City and Friends also seasonal staples.

All that said, any price increases to this year’s LEGO advent calendars are still to be confirmed by the LEGO Group, so we could end up consistent with 2022 come September (the typical release window for these sets). Time will tell…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
