LEGO Classic Space Blacktron faction rumoured to return in 2025

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: the LEGO Classic Space subtheme Blacktron is rumoured to return to store shelves in 2025.

The 1987 faction made a comeback of sorts in 2023 through the gift-with-purchase 40580 Blacktron Cruiser, hot on the heels of 2022’s 90th-anniversary 10497 Galaxy Explorer. The rumour mill then suggested that the baddies of Classic Space would be returning proper in 2023 or 2024, in a set that eventually ended up being 10391 Over the Moon with Pharrell Williams (which, to be fair, does include a black spaceship).

Instagram user a.clay.brick now reports that the subtheme really will return in 2025, and while details beyond that are scarce at the moment, there’s plenty of potential in resurrecting Blacktron. The colour scheme of the first generation of Blacktron sets – black, trans-yellow and trans-red – is just as effective today as it was in the late ‘80s, and a souped-up version of a classic ship (in the same vein as the revamped Galaxy Explorer) could be very cool indeed.

Blacktron wasn’t all about its vehicles, though: the original subtheme’s biggest set was actually 6987 Message Intercept Base, and a remake of that sprawling space station would arguably have even more potential than another spaceship. It would be neat to see the LEGO Icons team build its craterous baseplate from regular bricks too, in the same manner as 10320 Eldorado Fortress’s brick-built raised baseplate.

The LEGO Group could just as easily dip its toes back into the pool of Blacktron II, though, following 71046 Series 26 Space’s very impressive Blacktron Mutant minifigure. Seeing a bunch of new takes on Blacktron II astronauts and mutants would be a fine starting point for a new and original LEGO Blacktron set (versus a direct remake), and we’ve seen the LEGO design team take a few different directions for its nostalgic sets over the past few years, so it’s not entirely out of the question.

All this comes with the caveat that we’ve been here and heard this kind of rumour before, so it’s tough to treat this one with anything less than scepticism. But we’ve yet to hear anything on a 2025 set that returns to the vault of classic LEGO themes in the same way 10320 Eldorado Fortress did in 2023 and 10332 Medieval Town Square has done this year, so you never know.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
