LEGO partners with BMW, McLaren, and Mercedes for new racing sub-theme

The LEGO Group is teaming up with BMW, McLaren and Mercedes for a new wave of sets across Technic, Icons and Speed Champions.

Much like the growing range of space-themed sets that span multiple themes, the LEGO Group has launched a new range of seven racing-themed sets across LEGO Technic, Icons, Speed Champions, and City. The sets partner with major car brands, including BMW, McLaren Racing & Senna, and Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 Team, to bring real-life cars to brick-built roads.

Two LEGO City sets from the racing range have already been released on January 1, 60399 Green Race Car and 60406 Race Car and Car Carrier Truck, with the other five due for release on March 1. Scroll down for all the details on the upcoming sets.

LEGO Technic

For LEGO Technic, that means 42165 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance Pull-Back and 42171 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance will be racing their towards you then. Unusually, both sets released alongside each other tackle the same car, but one is a smaller and more affordable pull-back build and the other a larger and more expensive display-focused model. The idea is for both kids and adults to get excited about the same car, in a build that best suits their interests.

“Play is a great way for families to bond over shared passions,” said Niels Henrik Horsted, Head of Product at the LEGO Group. “Coming together with a group of partners to create a variety of play experiences for families out there is a great opportunity for the LEGO Group, and we have created vehicles for both adults and kids, so they can enjoy a shared play experience together, as they build.”

LEGO Speed Champions

Over in LEGO Speed Champions, two new sets are on the way, introducing three cars overall. 76919 2023 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car brings the iconic the black-and-papaya livery of McLaren to life, matching its larger sibling, 2022’s 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car.

Plus, there’s the already-revealed double pack of 76922 BMW M4 GT3 & BMW M Hybrid V8 Race Cars, featuring two models and two minifigure drivers. Both of the race cars are packed with authentic rating details thanks to the partnership between the LEGO Group and BMW.

LEGO Icons

Last but certainly not least, LEGO Icons has recreated one of the most successful F1 cars of all time: the 1988 McLaren MP4/4. The result is 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna, developed in collaboration with McLaren Racing and the Senna brand and including a detailed minifigure and commemorative plaque for Ayrton Senna himself. The build itself includes working steering, rod suspension, an adjustable rear wing, slick tires, mirrors, a gearshift, and a detailed turbocharged V6 engine, as well as a display stand for both the car and the Senna minifigure.
