LEGO City’s 2025 F1 range sounds like a junior take on Speed Champions

The first details on one of next year’s rumoured LEGO City Formula 1 sets have surfaced, pointing to what sounds like a junior take on Speed Champions.

A wide assortment of LEGO City Formula 1 sets are said to be in the works for 2025, ranging from a pit crew and garage to a starting grid and finish line. Instagram user lego_minecraft_goat now claims that one of the smallest sets in the range will be 60442 F1 Driver with McLaren Race Car, retailing for $14.99 / €12.99 for 86 pieces. It’s said to be six studs wide, use McLaren’s black and orange colourway and will sport the new Mario Kart wheels.

Rumours of an Alpine and Mercedes garage have already suggested we’re looking at licensed F1 cars in LEGO City in 2025, but this is the first time we’ve heard details on what those cars could look like – and it really does sound Speed Champions-lite, serving up smaller and cheaper six-wide cars for a younger audience. (By contrast, Speed Champions is said to be delivering a complete starting grid of eight-wide F1 cars in March.)

60442 F1 Driver with McLaren Race Car is also thought to include one driver minifigure, again mimicking the approach of LEGO Speed Champions sets like 76919 2023 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car. Take these details with a grain of salt for now, but if this set does pan out as expected, it could be a neat alternative for anyone who misses the old days of six-wide Speed Champions cars – or just can’t stomach the current prices of its eight-wide cars.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
