LEGO confirmed for San Diego Comic-Con 2021 – will we see new sets?

The LEGO Group has been confirmed as an exhibitor for San Diego Comic-Con at Home 2021, suggesting we may see new sets revealed at the virtual convention.

Just like last year’s event – which was the first SDCC to be held entirely online – this summer’s convention will be completely digital, which means the LEGO Group won’t be able to have its usual stand to show off new sets and minifigures (nor give away convention exclusives).

That doesn’t mean we won’t see anything new revealed while SDCC 2021 is taking place, however – especially as the LEGO Group is now listed among the exhibitor line-up. While it’s not hosting any panels, it’s not a stretch to imagine that it might choose to preview some of its licensed 2022 portfolio across the same weekend.

More difficult to predict is whether the LEGO Group will debut any convention exclusives. Last year’s planned SDCC sets – including 77905 Taskmaster’s Ambush and 77906 Wonder Woman – ended up being sold at retail in the US, after the last-minute cancellation of the in-person event.

With a little more notice this year, however, the LEGO Group may choose to distribute those exclusives differently – or it may have canned them altogether. We’ll keep you posted in the run-up to SDCC at Home 2021, which takes place from July 23 to 25.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
