LEGO Czech Republic factory assists in sustainability efforts

The LEGO factory in Kladno of the Czech Republic has more than doubled its renewable energy capacity thanks to a huge solar panel expansion.

Following the announcement for the new Vietnam factory earlier this month, even the existing LEGO factories can’t help but have their own reveals. Over in the Czech Republic, the Kladno factory has completed another phase in the expansion of its rooftop solar park.

The installation of new solar panels has more than doubled the capacity for renewable energy at the factory, assisting in the LEGO Group’s efforts towards sustainability. Notably, the new solar panels are projected to reduce the factory’s carbon footprint by more than 9% of its total annual electricity consumption in the near future.

“Expanding our renewable energy capacity at our factory is a key part of our commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of our manufacturing activities and reducing our carbon footprint,” commented Michaela T. Horáková, general manager of the LEGO factory in Kladno. “The newly installed solar panels are projected to reduce the factory’s overall carbon footprint by more than 9% of its total annual electricity consumption in the coming years.”

There are now twice as many panels as before on previously unused rooftops, expanding the capacity for renewable energy at the factory without needing to expand the footprint of the facility.

Construction is currently underway in a new factory in Vietnam and one other in the USA, on track to begin operations in 2025 and 2027 respectively. The LEGO Group confirms that they are aiming to include on-site and off-site solar facilities to match the total annual energy requirements of each factory.

These efforts continue across its current manufacturing sites in Denmark, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Mexico and China and there are plans to build a solar park in Billund, Denmark to meet the energy needs of the LEGO Group’s offices and facilities throughout the city.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
