LEGO explains why the Death Star isn’t a Master Builder Series set

LEGO Star Wars 75419 Death Star is part of the Ultimate Collector Series, and here’s why it’s not in the Master Builder Series instead

The Ultimate Collector Series is the most well-known collection of LEGO Star Wars sets, featuring the biggest and most detailed builds that are all aimed at older fans and collectors. Back in 2018, a new collection adjacent to the Ultimate Collector Series started, titled the Master Builder Series.

The only entrants in this series so far are 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City and 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina, both of which are key locations as opposed to vehicles like those of the Ultimate Collector Series. While you might expect 75419 Death Star to fall under this collection, the LEGO Group doesn’t appear to consider the Death Star a location, but a giant vehicle.

Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Creative Director of LEGO Star Wars, offered an explanation for this decision in a recent interview with Brick Fanatics and other LEGO fan media.

“I would say we have had a lot of talks back and forth, ‘Is this an Ultimate Collector Series set, or what is it?’” commented Jens. “But since it’s a space station, we thought, okay, it’s actually in the category of almost more a vehicle than a [location].”

The Death Star would need to move to target different planets and avoid the inevitable moons and planets blocking the path of the superlaser, and it was certainly considered a vehicle in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, where it appeared as both a capital ship and a Microfighter.

“It is something we have been discussing, but also the fact that it’s coming with the plaque here, and it’s on a stand – there are several things where we think, okay, it definitely works in the category of Ultimate Collector Series.”

The Ultimate Collector Series has far more entries than the Master Builder Series, and its name arguably carries more weight throughout the LEGO community, spanning a full 25 years as opposed to seven. This may be another reason why the biggest and most expensive LEGO Star Wars set has been categorised into the Ultimate Collector Series. The recognition of the series will bolster the upcoming launch of 75419 Death Star on October 1 for LEGO Insiders and October 4 widely.

It also helps that 75419 Death Star sits alongside 75192 Millennium Falcon and 75313 AT-AT, the other biggest LEGO Star Wars sets ever designed.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
