LEGO double VIP points returning for Amazon Prime Day

The LEGO Group is bringing back its double VIP points event for two days only next week, potentially to compete with Amazon’s Prime Day promotion.

We’ve only just come out of the last double VIP points event, which ran from June 24 to 30, but the chance to earn twice the usual cashback on all purchases online and in-store is already slated to return from July 12 to 13. That’s timed perfectly to match Amazon Prime Day, the online retail giant’s annual discount event, which surely isn’t an accident.

LEGO VIP points are usually equivalent to 5% of your purchase back to spend on future orders and exclusive rewards, which means double VIP points equals 10% cashback. (Quick maths.) That’s typically best applied to new and exclusive LEGO sets, such as – at the moment – 10303 Loop Coaster and 21334 Jazz Quartet.

Amazon Prime Day, meanwhile, will likely offer more substantial discounts on older sets. It’s a very different proposition from double VIP points, so the timing of the LEGO Group’s event – confirmed in a newsletter to VIP members – is nothing short of curious.

Regardless of the company’s intentions, though, next week’s event will be the perfect opportunity to pick up 10303 Loop Coaster (which only launched on July 1 for VIP members, and July 5 for everyone else) with double VIP points. That’s equivalent to £34.50 / $40 / €40 back to spend on yet more LEGO, or an effective discount of 10% on the brand new Fairground Collection ride.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
