Rumoured LEGO Dune set could face last-minute delays

The rumoured LEGO set based on Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series could be facing last-minute delays – at least if the LEGO Group hopes to launch it alongside the upcoming sequel.

10327 Ornithopter was originally slated to be joining the LEGO Icons line-up in November this year, coming in at 1,327 pieces for €164.99. That would have seen it arrive on shelves in tandem with Dune: Part Two, the second instalment in Villeneuve’s silver-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s esteemed sci-fi novels, which was scheduled to debut in cinemas on November 3, 2023.

Movie tie-in sets rarely release so closely to their source material, so this would have been an absolute win for the LEGO Group. But Warner Bros. has now pushed the release of Dune: Part Two all the way back to March 15, 2024, at least partly as a result of the ongoing Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild strikes in Hollywood. While filming has obviously long since wrapped on the movie, the strike also prevents stars from promoting their projects.

Warner is clearly gambling on the star power of Dune: Part Two’s cast pulling audiences into cinemas through a press tour, which makes sense: the sequel’s roster of talent includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem, Austin Butler, Josh Brolin and more. Those are big names. But the timing also suggests the studio thinks negotiations will be complete (and the strike resolved) by March, which may offer a faint silver lining to the delay.

It won’t be much comfort to the LEGO Group, though, if that rumoured Ornithopter – which was first reported by Promobricks – genuinely is in the offing. The company and its stakeholders at Warner Bros. will now need to decide whether to launch the LEGO Icons set without its tentpole release in cinemas, or push pause on production and distribution until early next year.

That’s if the LEGO Dune set exists at all, of course. For now, it’s still just a rumour, so take it with the customary grain of salt.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
